There will be many variations between cleaners, but there are things that are common to all of them to look out for. Generally, the higher the power rating (in watts) the more powerful the cleaner is. Also look out for features such as bagless cleaners (which don’t require bags to be changed and replaced) and special features such as extra power and filtration for animal hair.

  • Cost effective
  • Wide cleaning mouth
  • Perfect for deep carpets

Cons

  • Bulky – can weight a lot

 

Canister Vacuum cleaners

Pros

  • Compact – easy to store and use
  • Easy to change attachments – smaller hose makes it easier to change attachments
  • Lightweight – easy to move on stairs

Cons

  • Hard to manoeuvre – wheels do not allow 360° travel

 

Stick vacuum cleaners

Pros

  • Less bulky – takes up less space
  • Quick clean up – Lightweight and easy to pull out for minor spills
  • Versatile – can sometimes be used as a held-held cleaner
  • Low noise level

Cons

  • Not ideal for large homes
  • Small waste bin – needs to be emptied regularly

 

Hand-held vacuum cleaners

Pros

  • Portable – small size makes it easy to use anywhere
  • Lightweight – easy to hold and move around
  • Easy to use – usually an on/off button for operation

Cons

  • Limited capacity – Needs to be emptied regularly
  • Less suction power – The suction power is lower than most standard sized- vacuum cleaners

 

 

Robotic vacuum cleaners

Pros

  • No effort required – the machine operates itself automatically
  • Automatic floor settings – adjusts itself to different floor conditions
  • Long-lasting – Built in hardwearing materials that are stronger than standard vacuum cleaner plastic
  • Self-charging – the cleaner will return to its charging unit to recharge itself once it’s done its job

Cons

  • Expensive – the cleaners are much more expensive than standard vacuum cleaners
  • Cleaning time – takes far longer than manually cleaning

 

Car vacuum cleaners

Pros

  • Small size – usually handheld size, they can be stored in the boot of your car
  • Attachments – usually supplied with attachments for reaching the most remote nooks and crannies
  • Long cable – if your model isn’t a cordless version it will usually have a long cable so that you can reach the boot

Cons

  • Power – these machines aren’t usually hugely powerful

 

Pet hair vacuum

Pros

  • Powerful suction – These tend to have more suction power for sucking up even stubborn pet hairs
  • HEPA filter – filters designed specifically for animal hair reduces odour and removes allergens from the air
  • Boost function – some cleaners have a special super powered suction boost for really stubborn hairs

Cons

  • Noisy – these tend to be louder because they have more powerful motors for greater suction
